I only knew little about documentary films before listening to this lecture. I watched a few documentary films, three to five annually, haply. Also, I usually watch documentary films about nature and culture, but the speaker showed us was about: "how people struggle to live?" Unlike people in movies or dramas, who mostly have clear objectives, in the documentary films that the speaker showed us, what I see was the ordinary daily lives like everyone, the time goes the same as we have, and maybe that is the reason why it is rarely for the audience to see people in the documentary films achieve the ambitious goals, which makes people in the documentary films not being so apparently different apart from our daily lives because it would take time and efforts to make it, and thus perhaps it would be a little boring for the audience. I did think that before; however, after this speech, after watching so many different types of films that the speaker showed us, and even after knowing that documentary films always take first place when competing with the best works in other genres for the ultimate prize, I rethink that what is the meaning of the documentary films? Probably, it provides us a new way to appreciate the world, not too close to integrate into their lives, not too far to ignore, but merely watch, listen, and feel quietly. After that, there is endless reflection. This lecture benefited me a lot: not only did I know TFAI, Taiwan Film& Audiovisual Institute, but also the first time I realized that there is such an origination that works silently for documentary films in Taiwan, and also I got information that there would be many great works playing on the exhibition, I hope I would be free that time, and drop myself into the world of the documentaries. And I am glad that this speech is in English because this is a relatively big topic, which contains documentaries from around the world. In this case, Lectures in non-native languages help me get into the situation faster.
