  1. Introduction of Speaker:

Dr. Cheng-hwa Tsang (Academician of Academia Sinica) received his B.A. and M.A. in Anthropology from NTaiwan University and his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Harvard University in 1986. After returning to Taiwan, he joined the Institute of History and Philology at Academia Sinica. From 2002 to 2006, he was seconded to serve as Director of the National Museum of Prehistory, where he advanced major projects in archaeology and cultural heritage preservation. He is a distinguished professor at NTHU and an Academician of Academia Sinica.

Dr. Tsang’s research spans Taiwan, southern China, and the Philippines, focusing on prehistoric cultural interactions and the origins of Austronesian peoples. His representative work, Archaeology of the Peng-hu Islands, reveals the dynamic relationship between prehistoric populations and their environment, significantly contributing to studying migration and cultural transmission in the Taiwan-Penghu region. He also led major rescue excavations at the Shihsanhang site and the Southern Taiwan Science Park in Tainan, showing how archaeology can balance economic development with cultural preservation while raising awareness at both societal and policy levels.

Dr. Tsang further pioneered Underwater Archaeology in Taiwan. Leading surveys and excavations in Penghu and along Taiwan’s coasts, he and his team discovered shipwreck sites, offering invaluable evidence of maritime exchange in East Asia and the Austronesian world. These achievements have expanded the horizons of Taiwanese archaeology and elevated its international standing. Over decades of research, preservation, and teaching—from Penghu to Shihsanhang, from the Southern Taiwan Science Park to underwater shipwrecks—he has left a lasting legacy that transcends disciplinary boundaries and marks an important milestone in Taiwan’s humanities and social sciences.
