Design Thinking from an Environmental Perspective: Bio-architecture Formosana's Proposal for Low-Carbon Aesthetics

When the Earth's environment becomes the starting point for design, how can architecture respond? How can design thinking, with the end in mind, be transformed into concrete and feasible architectural proposals? Starting from the core value of low-carbon aesthetics at Bio-architecture Formosana, this lecture will explore how architecture finds design possibilities amidst various conditions and constraints. By examining natural climatic and environmental factors such as wind, light, water, and heat, the talk will navigate through systems, structures, materials, interfaces, and user needs. Furthermore, using representative works like the National Archives as case studies, the lecture will guide students from environmental responsiveness and design ideation to the realization of concepts, providing an understanding of how a large-scale public building gradually develops and takes shape.

🎤Speaker：

LIN, CHANG-LIEN /Principal Architect, Bio-architecture Formosana

Holding a Master's degree in Architecture from Tunghai University, Chang-Lien Lin joined Bio-architecture Formosana in 2008 and has served as a Principal Architect since 2019. His portfolio includes the Taipei Health Public Housing, the new construction of the Huashan Judicial Park, and the CPC Green Energy Technology Research Institute. He has served as an adjunct professor in the architecture departments of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) and Chung Hua University. He also held the position of Vice Chairman of the Academic Committee of the National Association of Architects and served as the first Chairman of the Bio-architecture Formosana Foundation, assisting in the promotion of architectural academic activities.

He specializes in architectural planning, design, and project management. His original background in atmospheric sciences provides him with a unique perspective on architecture, placing heavy emphasis on the flow of wind, lighting design, and even biodiversity within his projects. Highly skilled in circular architecture and net-zero design, he has led his team to win multiple net-zero architectural awards and is frequently invited to give lectures and interviews on the subject. Lin also has extensive experience in social housing design, leading numerous public housing projects across various cities and counties.

🏛️National Archives Exploration Tour | From Architectural Space to Historical Memory

How does a building collect the stories of an era?

The National Archives is a cultural venue that intertwines low-carbon architecture, environmental sustainability, history, and public memory.

This Art & Culture Bus tour will take you into the National Archives. Starting with the architectural landscape, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the design concepts of public buildings, spatial narratives, and their responses to the local environment. Next, stepping into the exhibition areas—through the permanent exhibition "Reading the Island: Our Stories" and current special exhibitions—the memory ties, scenes, and archival objects settled in the space will transport visitors to the post-war scenes of large-scale population migration to Taiwan, revealing a diverse Taiwan amidst global tides.

1. Successful applicants will be notified via email. For insurance purposes, international students must email a copy of their ARC to: yachin0930@mail.ntust.edu.tw
2. Filling out the form does not guarantee a spot; registration is only complete upon review and email confirmation. A deposit of NT$300 is required (payment details will be sent to successful applicants). The deposit will be fully refunded after completing the feedback questionnaire at the end of the event.
3. Please bring your own drinking water and rain gear.
4. Please arrive on time(13:20 at the campus Main Entrance); latecomers will not be waited for.
