[Lecture] The Warmth of Toad Hill: Preserving Human Culture within Taipei’s Urban Crevices

Nestled between the bustling Gongguan area and high-tech parks lies Toad Hill (Chanjushan)—a place often overlooked in official urban blueprints, yet deeply rooted in the memories of its residents.

This site is a living tapestry woven from military dependents' villages, labor camps, and the stories of diverse migrants. Today, it stands at a crossroads, facing the immense pressure of urban renewal and demolition. Using Toad Hill as a real-world case study, this seminar invites students to realize that a place's true value isn't measured by its land price, but by how people live within it.

Through the lens of Toad Hill, we will explore some of the most pressing questions of our time: In an era of rapid urban expansion, when spaces are redesigned, who gets to stay and who is forced to leave? What role can the younger generation play in saving these vanishing places? As you venture out into the world, will there still be a place behind you that you can truly call "home"? From a single settlement to a shared future...
