This course focuses on the theme of museums and urban culture, beginning with students’ everyday observations to explore how museums serve as cultural nodes in modern cities. While preserving historical memory, museums also participate in shaping urban space, constructing collective memory, and representing social narratives. Topics include the origins and transformation of museums, the power relations embedded in seeing and interpretation, the sense of place and cultural landscape, the influence of digital technology, and everyday cultural practices. The course is primarily lecture-based, supplemented with field visits and in-class workshops. Through assigned readings, case analyses, and student-led cultural observation projects, students will engage with the multiple dimensions of how museums and urban culture intersect, cultivating their abilities in critical thinking and cultural interpretation.
